How to do Pitra Trapan?

One year after death on a daily basis, each son and daughter should be given water (Tarpan) in the name of departed souls or ancestors for their peace (shanti) and also for attaining the Vaikuntha (Padvi) title.

Pitra Trapan is considered very important in Hinduism after death. According to Brahma Vaivarta Purana, before pleasing the Gods, man should please his ancestors. According to Hindu astrology, Pitra dosha is considered as one of the most complex horoscope defects.

It is believed that by pouring water to the ancestors between thumb and index finger, their soul gets peace. According to the scriptures, the part of the claw on which the thumb is, that part is called Pitru Tirtha. In this way, the water offered between the thumb and index finger is passed through the Pitru Tirtha. It is believed that water reaches the ancestors through the thumb and they find peace and also attaining the Vaikuntha (Padvi) title.
